Bedford Community Resource Center needs a little help

Outdoor backpack
Image via Wikipedia

The Bedford Community Resource Center needs a little help. The Bedford Community Resource Center is part of the Bedford Community Christmas Station. Among the many great things they do for the community, each year they put together a backpack of back-to-school supplies for area school children.
These supplies are the basics (pencils, paper, glue sticks) children need as part of the learning process. it is estimated each backpack full of supplies costs about $10 per student. Over 300 students have applied, without theses backpacks many children will come to school empty handed this year. Often we hear of teachers using their own money to buy supplies, but our teachers already give so much.

The ghost of Edgar Allen Poe appears at Avenel in Bedford VA

The ghost of Edgar Allen Poe appears at Avenel in Bedford VA

Last night, the Ghost of Edgar Allen Poe revised Historic Avenel in Bedford VA.  To retell some of his famous stories. We learned more about the life of Poe and his exploits. But more importantly we learned of Poe’s ties to Bedford VA. Historic Avenel was built by William M. Burwell a classmate of Mr. Poe’s at the University of Virginia. While it is known Gen Robert E. Lee visited and stayed in Avenel, it was suggested that Mr. Poe (a resident of Richmond, VA) also visited Historic Avenel in Bedford VA.

The Ghost of Poe was played by Mr. Glen Ayers, a retired English Literature teacher of Stanton River High School in Bedford County. He gave a very dramatic and impressive performance. From the stairs near the portico entrance of Historic Avenel, Mr Ayers told us the story Poe’s life. Weaving Avenel into the story and then proceeding to recite “The Raven” insinuating Lenora (a pseudonym for Poe’s first wife Virginia) is the ghost known as the “white lady” who haunts Avenel.

The well attended event was a fund raiser for Historic Avenel in Bedford VA, where many educational and historical events are held each year in addition to weddings and receptions.

Image from 2009

Tonight July 16 pm is the first performance of this years summer camp Little Town players performed in the Elks Home theater in Bedford VA. They also perform tomorrow at 7pm.

What is the Little Town Players Summer Theater?
Each year, the Little Town Players offer a summer theater camp for Bedford children. This is not your usual camp, they really teach these kids how to act and perform. Furthermore, the kids help build the sets and pick out costumes. Based upon the kids, a custom script is written. Last years script was hilarious and I am willing to bet this year will be even better.
The children are divided into two groups based upon age. The younger group performs first and this years play is called “The Pirate Princess”, the older kids will be performing “Pirates, Pixies, a Parrot, and the Family Reunion“.

Hope to see you there!

You can see their fireworks from almost anywhere in town, however the best places are the Bedford Welcome Center and Liberty Lake Park. This year offers a new twist. Rangers will lead a hike up Sharp Top mountain to see the sunset and the fireworks from Sharp Top’s summit.

Liberty University will also have  “Celebration on the Mountain”. Which is a day long event similar to their annual event which is a change this year due to the construction going on at Williams Stadium.
